About this title

Synopsis:

Explains the revolutionary surgical technique of RK, radial keratotomy, which was designed to permanently correct nearsightedness, farsightedness, and astigmatism

From Library Journal:

Refractive eye surgery is an operation that permanently changes the curvature of the eye in an attempt to eliminate the need for eyeglasses or contact lenses. Dr. Shulman, assistant professor of Ophthalmology at Mount Sinai Medical Center and author of Cataracts , devotes most of the present work to radial keratotomy, which is used to correct myopia (nearsightedness). RK is the most common kind of refractive surgery. He also discusses more difficult operations for those who are farsighted, astigmatic, or very severely nearsighted. RK surgery itself entails risk; Shulman carefully explains complications and problems that may arise. The book begins with a straightforward explanation of the physiology of vision, gives a brief history of refractive eye surgery, and takes the reader through the eye examination, surgery, and recovery.
