This copy inscribed by the author on the front free endpaper "Mr. J. B. Allen from his friend the Author." This work includes chapters on the music of the Egyptians, the Hebrews, Greeks, Ancient Rome, the early Christian Church, the British Isles, Metrical Psalmody, sixteenth Century European music, opera, and much more.
