About this title

Synopsis:

Forty-five beautifully reproduced black and white photographs of Gloucester, Massachusetts by photographer Nubar Alexanian. Softbound Edition 10 x 10 inches. These images manage to be beautiful and honest at the same time. They are the real Gloucester, hard edges and all. - Sebastian Junger, author, The Perfect Storm Gloucester Photographs gathers over two decades of work by Nubar Alexanian, whose haunting black-and-white images depict the life of one New England coastal town, from the world of its hard-working fishermen to its sleek schooner races. - Newsweek

From the Inside Flap:

For thirty years, Nubar Alexanian has been photographing life in Gloucester, Massachusetts, a fishing city on the edge of America between the Old World and the New, its cultural soul pledged to Italy, Finland, Portugal, Cape Verde and a hundred other places. Its primary occupation, fishing, is the most dangerous job in America, claiming generation after generation of husbands, fathers and sons, and giving rise to a tradition of funerals, fiestas, novenas and, ultimately, hope. These traditions bring us images made in Gloucester’s neighborhoods and by extension all the way out to Georges Bank. All of this takes place in the astonishing light of her breathtaking landscape.

For those intrigued with Gloucester, these photographs are an intimate exploration of her complexity and beauty, celebrating what it is that draws us to this place and why. For those who call it home, Alexanian’s Gloucester–his people and landscapes–resonate so deeply and eloquently, they invite a reaffirmation of our devotion, revealing more of our soul than our image. In these documentary photographs, image transcends moment, specificity gives way to metaphor, and our experience is transformed to a poetic discovery of this special place.
