About this title

Synopsis:

As five cousins and their families arrive by various means of transportation, Grandma's home in Brooklyn gets livelier and livelier.

From Publishers Weekly:

From the collaborators of last year's wonderful Watch the Stars Come Out comes this funny, realistic account of a family gathering at the turn of the century. Five little girls of roughly the same age describe the different ways their large and boisterous families travel to Grandma's house. Millie from Manhattan rides with her parents and younger brother on a bicycle, Bella from Brooklyn takes a "golden yellow trolley," Carrie from Queens arrives in her father's white grocery wagon, Beatie from the Bronx takes two trains and Stella from Staten Island takes the ferry. The whole of each familylaughing girls, fighting boys, crying babies, bemused adults (including ever-smiling Grandma)assembles in the backyard for the family photograph (shown in sepia), which concludes the story. A view of a family tradition that every child is bound to recognize as well as an ingenious way to look at transportation.
