Inscribed and signed by the author on the half-title page: "Best wishes / to E-- and D-- / from Charles Houston." The author (1913-2009) was a major figure in international climbing circles during the 20th century, participating in early attempts on K2 and Nanda Devi (when his party summitted the latter in 1936, it was the highest mountain ever climbed). Houston was a flight surgeon in World War II and then a physician who pioneered research into the effects on altitude on human health.
