About this Item

8pp. Illustrated. 19 x 12.5 cm. Original stiff beige wraps with black border and a top-hatted man under an apple tree on front wrap; stabbed and sewn with brown thread. First edition, first issue. Crane A20; Clymer, p.67. First issue with ÒAÓ on page [3], with the long line on page 7 (subsequently corrected in issue ÒBÓ), and with the incorrect spelling of ÒSquireÓ throughout. According to Clymer, ÒFive hundred copies of this booklet were printed, but allegedly because the next to the last line on page 7 was too long and spoiled the composition, the publisher decided to withdraw the entire edition. According to his records, however 37 copies had already been distributed beyond recall. No copies were numbered. He then printed 203 copies of another edition.Ó The cover illustration is by Anna Moore Newton McGraw, mother of the publisher, Earle Newton II. According to the obituary of publisher and scholar Newton [1917-2006] written by his daughter from whom this copy was acquired, he Òbegan his career when he started his own printing business, The Bibliophile Press, out of his parentsÕ home in 1930 when he was just 13 years old. He printed cards, letterheads and pamphlets, and continued to operate his press during the summers while he was a student at Amherst College. AmherstÕs poet-in-residence, Robert Frost, was very interested in his studentÕs printing career [and] . offered Newton the opportunity to print the first separate edition of his poem ÔThe Gold Hesperidee.Õ NewtonÕs mother, herself an accomplished artist, illustrated the cover. The publisherÕs copy of the poem is inscribed, ÔTo Earle Newton, my best wishes in his next undertaking as a publisher, Robert Frost.ÕÓ As new -- a fine copy of an uncommon Frost item.
