Arriving in California by land and sea via New Orleans and Nicaragua in October 1849 visiting first San Francisco and then to the southern mines through Stockton to Double Springs and was involved in the 'Chilean War'. Mining proved a disaster so he moved to Mokelumne Hill where he published the 'Calaveras Chronicle' for a short span.
