Brand New, Unread Copy in Perfect Condition. A+ Customer Service! Summary: This stunning book covers the historic, literary and artistic grandeur of Spain during its Golden Age (1492-1659). This period, marked by conquest and Catholicism, the writings of Miguel de Cervantes, and the paintings of El Greco, ended in a blaze of glory with the paintings of Diego Velazquez. Stunning works of the Golden Age include Jose de Riberas Immaculate Conception and El Grecos many disturbing paintings for El Escorial, the enormous and magnificent monastery that was the seat of the Spanish monarchy and the Roman Catholic Church. Here, Joan Sureda places the painting, sculpture and architecture of the Golden Age in a cultural, historical and aesthetic context. It is the first book in English to explore Golden Age paintings alongside architecture and sculpture to give a complete picture of the era. This is a monumental achievement: all of the artworks have been specially photographed for the book, which will be published simultaneously in English, Russian and French. Bookseller Inventory #
A period of unparalleled wealth and prestige, Spain’s Golden Age (1492 1659) was one of conquest, Catholicism, and a spectacular cultural explosion that gave rise to some of the country’s most treasured masterpieces.
Following Columbus’s discovery of the New World in 1492, Spain entered an era of unprecedented power and influence as explorers and conquistadors plundered the riches of the Indies. For nearly 200 years, the combination of New World gold and fervent Christianity had a profound effect on art, as wealthy patrons commissioned both lavish portraits and inspirational works. Featuring José de Ribera’s Immaculate Conception, El Greco’s Toledo, and Diego Velázquez’s Las Meninas, renowned art historian Joan Sureda’s comprehensive volume is the first book to explore Golden Age painting alongside sculpture and architecture to give a complete portrait of this opulent era.

(Text englisch) 24 x 30 cm, 304 S., 215 farb. Abb., geb. Seller Inventory # 493996
