About this Item

61 p., hardcover, octavo (7 1/2" x 5"). This is a story of a king who loved music and decides that he can, indeed must, sing. However, he is a terrible singer. Seeking advice, he is told that if he eats a pie with one of all the singing birds in the world (the king's calculators calculate that there are 9,999 of them). His huntsmen hunt the world but come up one short-guess what it is. The story ends with a cliff-hanger. There are four other stories in the book. Laura Richards was the daughter of Julia Ward Howe, and Richards and her sister won a Pulitzer Prize for their book about her. Richards authored dozens of other very popular books. This one is very scarce and this a very good copy with no writing, book labels, etc.; it is complete and tight with firm hinges. The green cloth cover has an attractive illustration, is embossed, and has gilt title and decorations; it is worn at the extremities and there are two or three small stains in the interior. The nice illustrations are signed and dated but this bookseller cannot decipher the name. Bookseller Inventory # 30CSLR
