About this Item

A yard-sale find, this volume has suffered some indignities and grades "good only." Gilt "golden fleece" device to front board still visible at perhaps 30 percent, but gilt spine titles chipped away entirely. Some minor spotting & adhesions to boards, which are poking through at corners. Both hinges repaired. Dampstain to bottom fore-edge, which penetrates intermittently to lower outside corners of pages but not to text. Jacket long gone. However, book is signed in an elegant hand, in fountain pen, diagonally to the first blank: "To Edward H. McReynolds -- / Servas -- The Hapsburg Salute / Bertita Harding." McReynolds' distinctive "E * H * McR" bookplate to front pastedown. McReynolds was a midwestern newsman who organized the boxing match in which Gene Tunney got his start while both men both served with the U.S. Marines in France in 1918, and was widely credited with advising Tunney he could beat Jack Dempsey. McReynolds later joined the Missouri Pacific Railroad, rising to the position of assistant to the president and head of publicity, and additionally served as chairman of the National Advertising Association. Author Harding may have met him in that capacity through her husband, advertising agent Jack Harding. In December of 1937 -- the year of this inscription -- Edward McReynolds committed suicide after being accused of failing to pay $597.75 in Missouri state income taxes for the years 1930, 1931 and 1932, based on three years' taxable income of $16,990. 370 pp. including index. Reduced from $60. Bookseller Inventory # 003090
