About this Item

Quartet Books, London, 1993. First edition thus, hardcover. This is the reissue of the 1958 First Edition in English of the First Edition originally titled Min Gyllene Vag Fran Samarkand. Translated from the Swedish by Henning Koch. New in dust jacket. A perfect unread copy. The author tells the story of how he and his family escaped the Bolsheviks in Samarkand, by fleeing on camelback to Bokhara in the dead of night. With route maps for endpapers. A thrilling memoir by Russian novelist Jascha Golowanjuk, the chief of police is murdered in Kamarstan, and a revolutionary council is set up by the Bolsheviks. The red terror is spreading fast across Russia from Moscow. Ten-year-old Jascha knows his childhood days have come to an end when he finds his violin lesson cancelled due to gunfire. Samarkand is no longer a safe place for the bourgeoisie. With promises of help from the venerable Tartar Salmat-Aka, who loathes the Bolsheviks himself, Jascha's family sets off across the desert in disguise. Seeking refuge where it can, the caravan is plagued with disaster--treacherous guides abandon the fugitives with leaking water-skins, murderous bandits pursue them, and double-agents of the Bolsheviks betray them with near-fatal results. In Turkistan the infamous thief Sultan-Murat haunts every oasis, awaiting his chance to ransack the Russian caravan. The glittering goal of the Caspian Sea seems a long way off. Henning Koch translated the book from the Swedish. 0.0. Bookseller Inventory # 1199
