About this Item

Sir Hugh Walpole was a prolific and popular British author who wrote 36 novels, mostly historical fiction, and five volumes of short stories. Walpole was a popular and critical success in his day, and his 'Herries' books are still in print. However, his posthumous reputation was blighted by Somerset Maugham's devastating portrayal of him in Cakes and Ale. Walpole's short stories are appreciated by aficionados of supernatural fiction, of which the stories in "Golden Scarecrow" are a part, including "Hugh Seymour (A Prologue)", "Angelina", " ¿Enery"). Walpole's homosexuality was well-known and hindered his reputation during his lifetime, although he achieved considerable success and income and was admired in literary circles. After his death in 1941 he remained in almost total eclipse until recently, when his work has been given a modest revival. This copy is in almost astonishing condition given its age, binding clean and tight, no marks, sturdy unbumped corners, facsimile of Walpole's signature in black on deep red cloth boards, very slight foxing on ffep.
