About this title

Two boys and their grandfather go on an early-morning hunt for mushrooms, and when the old man passes away several days later, his grandsons learn to treasure their last expedition together.

From School Library Journal:

Kindergarten-Grade 2-In the first half of this book, Shane and Peter visit their grandparents, Papa and Nana. With Papa they pick mushrooms, garden, and feed the hens. At night they listen as he plays the accordion. Vacation over, they return home, waving good-bye to their healthy-looking grandfather. A few days later, the man suddenly dies. The latter half of the book is then spent putting Papa to rest. Even though he is gone, there are still tools in the garden, hens to feed, and music that lingers in their heads. Short, direct statements move the tale along. The minimalist approach gives the text a touch of poetry and establishes a nice, comforting framework, and yet Papa's death, the crux of the story, is never explained or examined. It seems almost out of character and thus unreal, leaving readers strangely unaffected. The colored-pencil illustrations support this poetic sense of reality. While they are attractive and sensitive, each picture is whitewashed and has a soft, dreamlike quality that distances readers from the events. Full-page closeups focus on the backs of legs or a handful of nails, thereby further limiting readers' connection to the characters.
