About this Item

Foreword by Virgil Carrington Jones. Small 4to. Blue cloth with gilt lettering. xii, 156pp. Frontispiece, illustrations. Fine. A tight and quite handsome second printing of this 1971 city history -- with a choice autograph addition: Tipped to an inner flyleaf is a Typed Note Signed from Virgil Carrington Jones, 1p, 8" X 10½", Washington, DC, 1962 January 12. Addressed to Paul Rude, a well-known New Jersey Civil War buff and Round Table officer. Near fine. Two original mailing folds; two file holes along top. On "Civil War Centennial Commission" letterhead, Jones arranges a meeting, doubtless on a Civil War matter. Signed simply "Pat" in blue fountain pen, his nickname among friends. Jones (1906-99) authored a number of respected Civil War studies, among them "Ranger Mosby" and "Grey Ghosts and Rebel Raiders," and was a lifelong devout Virginian. Bookseller Inventory # 37424
