3, 206 pages; 3/4 leather binding (4 x 6 1/4 inch) with red leather label and raised bands on the spine. Former owner's inscription, in latin, on the front flyleaf. Herbert Thorndike (1598-1672) was an English academic and clergyman. He was very influential under Charles I, and after the Restoration, under Charles II. During the rise of Cromwell he removed himself from Cambridge to avoid conflict with Cromwell's followers. This book was his second published and is concerned with the role of Church (Christian) and its governance. Very good clean copy. Bookseller Inventory # 14183
