About this Item

Signed by Author. Size: 4to. Text body is clean, and free from previous owner annotation, underlining and highlighting. Binding is tight, covers and spine fully intact. Signed and inscribed on the front cover by the author. Side stapled wraps, pages 315-333 reprinted from Volume 105, Numbers 3 Proceedings of the American Philosophical Society, Footnotes. A dissertation on the friendship and correspondence between Governor Clinton and Mr. Van der Kemp, who Clinton called "the most learned man in America". "The mutually productive friendship, sustained by a few more conversations on Clinton's Western visits, but chiefly nourished by correspondence, lasted until Clinton died. Van der Kemp supplied the erudition that Clinton admired but had no time to achieve, while Clinton represented the active, strenuous life from which Van der Kemp had long since withdrawn. Not only do their letters provide warm personal comments on happy and sad family news and reports of mutual friends, but what is more significant for the historian of ideas, they present a cross-section of the intellectual and practical interests which absorbed New Yorkers during the first quarter of the nineteenth century."
