About this title

A young girl dissatisfied with her appearance thinks of changes that would make her more attractive

From School Library Journal:

Gr 2-4-A rhyming story that was originally an animated film appearing on the Nickelodeon channel. Grace is an awkward Victorian child dissatisfied with her looks. She wants a movie-star mouth, wavy hair, a nose like a queen and...well, a whole new look. She wistfully imagines how she'd look as a blonde, green-eyed glamour girl or as a red-haired, violet-eyed movie queen. When a little boy asks her to come out to play ball, she at last concludes: ``Oh well, for now,/I guess I'll manage somehow./Being pretty just isn't all.And I think that someday/I'll turn out okay;but for now...let me catch that baseball!'' Weinberger depicts a pitiful child of the 1890s, daydreaming of the stereotyped notions of beauty from the 1950s and '60s. Although she eventually snaps back to reality, there seems to be no point to this slick, manipulated tale. The verse is uneven and the writing contrived. Illustrations are stills from the film, two-to-three inch rectangles centered on glossy tan pages. Most are identical to the film version except for Grace's wish for violet eyes, which are a brilliant blue here. As a short, snappy film, Grace is mildly acceptable; in the pages of a book, she falls flat.-Beth Tegart, Oneida City Schools, NY
