About this Item

SECOND REVISED EDITION, so stated; in Latin; INSCRIBED AND SIGNED BY THE AUTHOR on the 2nd front free endpaper "à Monsieur le Baron Silvestre de Sacy / hommage de l'auteur / Bopp"; the author's given name was 'Franz', but for this Sanskrit grammar it was changed by him to 'Francisco', as he did for a number of other publications that he wrote in Latin; Baron Silvestre de Sacy, 1758 to 1838, was the noted French Arabist and Orientalist, teacher of Champollion (who deciphered the Rosetta Stone) and many other famous linguists (including Bopp himself), orientalists, and theologians of the mid to late 19th century; it was Sir William Jones, British Judge of the Superior Court in Calcutta, who first proposed, in 1776, that Sanskrit, Greek, Latin, and other European languages were related to each other in that they were descendents of the same original language "which perhaps no longer exists", a paradigm change, in the Kuhnian sense, for the fledgling science of linguistics, since the attention of scholars would be refocused on systematic language evolution rather than haphazard language 'corruption'; Bopp took up this theme, and through long years of study and a spate of genial publications showed it to be incontrovertably true; he thus stood to Jones as Kepler did to Copernicus; the book is bound in marbled green boards with a 1/8 leather spine, gold lettering and horizontal lines on the spine; some rubbing of the leather, rubbing of the edges, and bumped corners, else in uncommonly good condition, overall rating Near Fine; would be of interest to collectors of fine or near fine editions of (signed) 19th century books on linguistics, Sanskrit, and the Indo-European theory as Bopp, Rask, Grimm, and others developed it, or of books associated with Silvestre de Sacy who championed a new approach to the East (one that we would do well to look at again); 8vo -- 9 inches tall, xiv + 335 numbered pages; pictures available on request. Store Description

Triple G Books is owned and operated by an emeritus professor of linguistics, who was also an ardent book collector over the period 1954 to 2007. Books for sale range from linguistics, pidgin & creole languages, sociolinguistics, anthropology, education, and comparative religion through modern first editions and German and Scandinavian books. A number of the books are valuable and hard to find, as for example a 1/2-leather-bound first edition of Alfred Russell Wallace's The Malay Archipelago (2 vols.), recently sold for presentation to the Mayor of London on his visit to Malaysia, and a first edition of H. G. Wells' The Time Machine, a novel of the 19th century pointing to a scary future, a continuing revelation to me. Triple G Books stands back of its books in every way.
