About this title

Synopsis:

The story of like at the Colorado Chautauqua. There were six thousand people and three automobiles in town. The railroad planned to bring thousands of visitors in for the Chautauqua at Boulder, Colorado. Almost two hundred Chautauqua assemblies dotted rural America, and each summer they brought "culture" in the form of concerts, orations, classes and uplifting entertainment to hundreds of isolated communities across the nation. After the turn of the century, Chautauquas spread like a contagion, and by 1924 thirty million Americans attended assemblies in over twelve thousand towns. The gatherings represented the country's first mass experience, during which the nation's rural citizenry was not only entertained, but it also studied, pondered and discussed the country's growing social problems. At the peak of the Chautauqua movement the twenties were roaring; the countryside was electrified, motorized and getting unionized. Then, in 1928, without apparant warning, the massive Chautauqua movement collapsed. Today the Colorado Chautauqua is one of the only remaining Chautauquas, and THE GRAND ASSEMBLY is the story of that Chautauqua. The Colorado Chautauqua assembly was begun in Boulder in 1898. Nestled below the dramatic Flatiron rocks a mile from downtown Boulder, the summer community immediately became one of the most popular spots in Colorado. Hundreds came daily. Classes, programs, mountain outings and just plain fun have been the assembly trademarks from the beginning. THE GRAND ASSEMBLY is filled with delightful, comic and heartwarming descriptions of life at this historic Chautauqua. The book is also an accurate and invaluable record of events of a gentle but vibrant time in the nation's life as it passed at the Colorado Chautauqua.
