About this Item

Hardcover in light blue cloth stamped in orange. The first Grosset & Dunlap reprint ediiton, issued after the stageplay production but before the movie version of 1932. Very good only, some discoloration to the cloth especially about the spine. 309 pp. plus publisher's ads at rear. In the original pictorial dust jacket featuring a lovely, short-haied flapper-era brunette speaking on the telephone in a hotel lobby; blurb on lower portion of the front and rear panels reads, "Millions of Readers and Playgoers have thrilled to this story.", rear flap with photo of Vicki Baum and biographical paragraphs concluding with , "The play, Grand Hotel, made from this novel had a contiunuous run for over a year on Broadway." Jacket is worn about the edges and especially the spine ends. Austrian novelist Vicki Baum wrote this novel about a high-end Berlin hotel and the various persons who worked and stayed there in the boom period of the late 1920s. It was an enormous best seller and was adapted into a stage play by William A. Drake which ran to great popularity in Europe and had a year-long Broadway run in New York. Drake then adapted the book and play into the 1932 movie version which starred Greta Garbo (it wa sinnthis film that she uttered her iconic line, "I want to be alone."), John and Lionel Barrymore, Joan Crawford, Lewis Stone, Wallace Beery and others. Now considered one of Hollywood's iconic films, it won the Best Picture Oscar, the only such winner for which none of its actors or actresses also received nominations. The play was revived as a Broadway musiclal in 1989. Quite scarce in dust jacket (which has the same design as the first editions of the book but differs from that of the 1932 "photoplay" edition).
