About this title

Synopsis:

An old woman performs a percipient rescue of her fisherman grandson after a storm

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-Grade 2-- Told in the form of a nursery rhyme, this is the story of a grandmother's maritime quest to save her grandson from drowning. For some unspoken reason, the woman knows to undertake the sea voyage in a row boat to a distant rocky shore some days away, where her grandson is about to founder. She rescues him and the two set out for home. The setting is some distant, perhaps Victorian, past in an isolated coastal area with some resortlike features. No faces are shown, so all emotion must be interpreted from words or posture. Rollicking, yet emotional and moving, the story combines short, upbeat rhythms with the eternal presence of the sea and its effects on the grandmother. In spite of the fact that his subject matter is simply an odd old lady in a rowboat, Halak confronts the metaphysics of love and the overwhelming presence of nature. Watercolor pictures are more opaque than watery, flat and brilliant like the full sun on the beach; they give a primitive, less pensive atmosphere to the story in contrast to the words. The page layout is unusual; framing the text on one side of the spread is an inch-wide vertical ``slice'' of the picture fully shown on the facing page. A pleasant reading experience, both profound and light at the same time. --Ruth K. MacDonald, Purdue University Calumet, Hammond, IN
