About this title

Polly is bringing her hungry friends home to visit her grandfather, but her telephone conversation with Grandpa Bud leads to hilarious misunderstandings and amazing results.

From School Library Journal:

PreSchool-K --Rotund and amiable Grandpa Bud is delighted when his granddaughter Polly phones to say she's coming to spend the night. She requests a chocolate cake, so he whips one up in honor of the occasion. Assuring him she'll be no trouble, the child calls back asking permission to bring along first Henry, then Rosie, then George. She tells him that they can all sleep in her bed and fills him in on their favorite foods. He dutifully prepares the treats and Polly arrives with her friends--a teddy bear, a stuffed pink hippo, and a green duck--in tow. This is a slight, one - joke picture book. Since youngsters will be privy to both Polly's conversation and her grandfather's misconceptions via thought balloons, it may elicit a giggle or two. However, the preponderance of exclamations and the repetitive, "What a surprise for Granpa Bud!" gets downright tiresome. Everything and everyone in the clean, pen-and-ink cartoons is round-edged and washed in pastel shades. The pudgy characters all have dots for eyes, bright rosy cheeks and noses, and the same unflagging smile. Sweetness aside, there is little else here to entice children to ask for a second visit. --Luann Toth, School Library Journal
