About this Item

[24] leaves : colored illustrations ; 21 cm. ; limp, blue suede chamois covers with leather label with gold lettering ; LC: PR3502 ; OCLC: 3880978 ; "The majority of the books were bound 'Roycroftie' in inexpensive limp suede, usually red, green or tan, glued over thin cardboard. The materials used were of poor quality and have tended to disintegrate with age. Most of the sueded covers were plain, with the title and author's name stamped in gold within a central medallion. ; Roycroft's triumphal entry into the twentieth century was the edition of Browning's The Last Ride (1900), with its carefully printed text nestled inside delicately painted pictorial page frames. Hubbard could be rightly proud of this little gem of bookmaking, but he failed to acknowledge; or, perhaps, was not told by [Samuel] Warner, to whom the book has been attributed, that it was a plagiary, taken, illustration and page design, from a book published in Paris in 1896. Hubb ard used the complete scheme of illustrations again, in 1903, for hisi Gray's Elegy."--Marie Via and Marjorie B. Searl, Head, Heart, and Hand: Elbert Hubbard and the Roycrofters, 1994 ; " There may have been better, more unique, and more artistic books than this printed in America, but we do not just remember what they are. The sample page shown does not reveal the beauty of the book, for of course it is not hand-illumined, and the paper is not equal to that used in the book. It just kind of gives you a chance to let your inward eye behold the wondrous beauty of a book, which might have been made in heaven, to use the language of Charles Lamb. The volume contains twelve different special border designs, all hand-illumined. Bound in limp chamois, silk lined."--Elbert Hubbard ; silk endsheets ; in the case of this very fragile title, nonetheless near FINE ; a very scarce title. Bookseller Inventory # 006832
