About this title

Book by Weatherford, Carole Boston

From Booklist:

Gr. 7-12. This volume in the Collective Biography Series offers solid introductions to the lives and legacies of some of the most prominent African American lawyers. An introduction gives a short history of African Americans in the legal profession, including Macon Allen, America's first black lawyer. Each subsequent chapter focuses on the life and work of such renowned attorneys as Thurgood Marshall, Marian Wright Edelman, Carol Moseley-Braun, and Charles Hamilton Houston, who, as vice dean of Howard University's law school, wanted to "train an army of African-American lawyers to battle for racial equality." Each short profile includes basic information about the individual's family and education, but Weatherford concentrates mostly on the lawyers' groundbreaking work, often including plenty of quotes (there's a passage from Barbara Jordan's impassioned statement at the Watergate Hearings, for example). Serviceable black-and-white photos, scattered through the text, and extensive notes and resources round out this fine title on a subject rarely covered for this age group. Gillian Engberg
