About this Item

Complete 7 volume set, a history of the First World War. Special deluxe leather set, National Alumni Edition, registered in the names of individuals who had contributed to the war effort. Published by American Legion, with two certificates bound in naming the person for whom the set was prepared -- George S. Hamilton. Hamilton was the owner of Hamilton Manufacturing Company in Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The Hamilton company was founded 1880 as printing company. In 1890's also went into furniture manufacturing. In the 1980's the company became part of the Fisher Scientific Company. Today there is a musum of woodblock printing at the old Hamilton company site. During WWI this company built airplane fuselages. One of the certificates reads: "The American Legion certifies that George S. Hamilton rendered patriotic services to the National Cause during The Great War - Turned over the entire plant of the Hamilton Manufacturing Company to the U.S. Government for the manufacture of Aeroplanes and was actively interested in its production during the war." A great detailed history of the war, with illustrative plates protected by tissue paper. Each volume over 400 pages. Color maps at end of last volume. The covers and spines have gilt decoration and lettering. Each volume is a different color and has a different coat of arms on the front cover -- representing the allied nations. A note in the front of the book reads: "The binding design of this volume is an authorized facsimile of the original art binding on the official French [or other country] copy of the Versailles Peace Treaty, which was signed by President Poincare [or other leaders] and deposited in the Archives of the [.] government." This set is ex-library (Holy Family College Library, Manitowoc, WI) with usual markings. All but one volume have a strip of library tape (in color matching cover) reinforcing the top of the spine. Volume 1 has library tape coving the spine and the corners. All volumes are in great shape internally, with tight bindings. Corners and spine ends worn, in some cases well worn. Volume 2 has a half inch tear at bottom of spine. A very nice set. No markings are tears noted in text. * * * This set weighs nearly 17 pounds and will require extra postage.
