About this title

Synopsis:

Fascinated by what lies beyond the boundaries of human experience, men and women have throughout history been irresistibly drawn to venture into the unknown.

Lavishly illustrated, 'To The Ends Of The Earth' charts the astonishing feats of history's most intrepid explorers. From the early voyages of the Ancient Greek mariner Colaeus, who first discovered that beyond the Mediterranean lay a far greater ocean, to the compelling tale of the race for the Poles, this book encompasses the discovery and exploration of the great continents and oceans of the world.

Whether motivated by the prospect of conquest, the spirit of scientific enquiry, nationalism, fanaticism, or just plain curiosity, the explorers in this book dared to seek out the most remote and inhospitable places on Earth and in so doing changed forever our perception of our planet.

"I determined never to stop until I had come to the end and achieved my purpose." David Livingstone (1813-1873), African explorer

From the Author:

Hello and thanks for taking the time to look up my latest book.

'To the Ends of the Earth: Journeys of the Great Explorers' is my second title. As with my debut text 'Science: 100 Scientists Who Changed the World', my new book examines history through the achievements of the men and women who made it.

Its primary aim is to be accessible to readers of all ages and interest. Thousands of years of exploration history are covered yet presented in a manner which I hope prevents the content from becoming overwhelming. At the same time, my intention has been to provide enough detail on each explorer to be specific and engaging.

One last thing: this is a beautiful-looking book. I realise I might not be the most objective on this point but its appearance is entirely down to the publisher and they have done a fantastic job. The cover is striking, yet the presentation and illustrations within are just as appealing.

I hope the combined package is something you love reading.

Best wishes,
Jon Balchin
