About this Item

First Edition. A handsome volume, fully illustrated with b&w archival photographs and maps. Map end papers. Bound in chacoal gray cloth, title blind-stamped to front cover and to spine in silver. Binding clean and tight, no marks. DJ unchipped and unclipped. Putnam, an alpinist of distinction and an authority on the mountains of western Canada, treats three historical events in British Columbia, and especially at Rogers Pass in the Selkirk Mountains, a huge obstacle for the construction of the Canadian Pacific Railway. The second was the building of the first European-style hotel in the mountains; and third was the first locality in North America to attract serious climbers from Europe. These three events are important and interrelated, but the author's focus is more on the people whose paths crossed at Glacier House. An overweight item, may require extra postage.
