Synopsis: Great Gravity takes to the streets when his easy life with a couple is shattered by a new baby, until a trial return home brings him face to face with the interloper, with whom he discovers he shares an amazing secret.
From School Library Journal:
Grade 2-5-- When his humans have a new baby, Great Gravity the Cat's perfect life of sauteed chicken livers and posh treatment takes a decided turn for the worse. He is unintentionally forgotten, and after a few days of inferior food, lack of sleep, and indignities involving wet diapers, the spurned and insulted Gravity takes off to find new owners. His comfortable world in a New York City apartment hasn't prepared him for the difficulties of the street, but his pride doesn't let him return home. He spends the night in a tree, afraid to come down, and it is there that his owners spot him in the morning. He finally meets the baby, and realizes he and this newcomer share the LOOK, the SECRET power of managing people by staring at them with intense concentration. Together they will rule the roost. This story of displaced sibling rivalry, first published in 1958 and newly illustrated, portrays a New York perhaps slightly more genteel than today's. The plot turns on the concept of the LOOK (always capitalized), which will strike a responsive chord in cat fanciers, as will Gravity's character--snobbish, with an inflated sense of self. The theme of running away from an unpleasant situation only to find home is best will certainly find its audience as well, but the telling is predictable and unexciting. --Leda Schubert, Vermont Department of Education, Montpelier
