First American edition. Hardcover in bright red patterned cloth with spinelettered in gilt. Illustrated endpapers featuring reproduction in black, red and white of 1931 Russian labor-related poster. Similar frontis illustrated in red, black and grey "Motto of Shock-Troopers". 368 pp. A work written during and immediately after the author's trip to Russia in the early 1930s that brings up to date his epochal narratives of that country's great socialist experiment; its publication came shortly after the official completion of the first "Five Year Plan" aimed at Russia achieving industrial independence.
