About this title

Synopsis:

First published in The Gettysburg Review, Wilson's novella takes us into an odd office world of the temporary employee where the work makes no sense, where catching up can bring about the end of an assignment but unemployment can come anyway in an instant with a wrong word or gesture, where tomorrow is never the same.

From the Back Cover:

In Great Things Are Coming, a temporary worker arrives at the Foundation to fill in for Lynette, a woman who has toiled at the firm for fifty-three consecutive years. The floors of her office are "an ancient Inca city of paper" with no instruction manual, no hint of what she does beyond the stacks and stacks of paper. For weeks upon weeks, he sorts those stacks. Some mornings he can't find his office because it seems to have moved, or a wall sprung up where none should be. His work makes no sense, files come in but none are sent out. The whispers say Lynette is mortally ill. Cancer some suspect, but no one knows for sure. No one he meets is there long enough as other temporary workers come and go. In his work he has discovered Lynette's dictionary which contains diary entries in the margins of the pages. Many are erotic and disturbing, detailing her years at the Foundation and her affair with its founder, her sexual longings, her dismay and ultimate disgust as she watches her body age. Through the entries, the temporary worker begins a relationship with a woman who he has never met, a relationship with a woman whom he will never meet, except through her words. More and more he identifies with Lynette, vicariously reliving her life as he reads the entries, his own life wasting away.

First published in The Gettysburg Review, Ian Randall Wilson's novella, Great Things Are Coming, takes us into an odd temporary world. With his vivid prose and eye for the unusual detail, Wilson tells a story of survival and redemption, a journey through time and memory, dark and bleakly funny, a celebration of lives lived and lost.
