About this title

The reader is asked to help the zookeeper locate ten escaped animals in the detailed illustrations

From School Library Journal:

Ten animals have escaped from the zoo and are hiding in the town. In each double-page spread, a different part is shown (the main street, the market, the beach, etc.) with an animal hiding in it. The zookeeper is shown in a white strip at the bottom, and the animal that is hidden on each page is added to the line following the zookeeper on the next page. The autumn-toned watercolors with pen lines show only white people, and the town is sparkly clean and perfectly maintained. The animals are very difficult to locate. The text is patronizing toward children old enough to find the animals: "Who is sleeping in the town square?," "Perhaps one of the animals is here--can you help the zookeeper find it?" While younger children might not mind the tone of the text, they will have trouble finding a brown-toned animal in a brown-toned scene. The town scenes are technically competent, but have no life or vivacity--very little of interest happens here. Handford's "Waldo" series (Little) is a much more colorful and successful example of this sort of thing. --JoAnn Rees, Sunnyvale Pub . Lib . , CA
