About this Item

4to. Burgundy cloth, dust jacket. 160pp. Extensive illustrations (some color), pictorial endpapers. Near fine/very good. Slightest bit of mild jacket wear. A tight and lovely first edition of this company history by the former Rudolf Bing assistant (1925-91) who single-handedly transformed this regional opera into one of the country's premiere companies. The author signs and dates this copy large and bold in black fineline on the half-title page: "Robert Herman / Miami August 1986." Above this is a personalized inscription ("To Marilou Sargent -- / With warm and happy memories / of an Italian adventure!"), in the same pen but apparently in a different (likely secretarial) hand. A superb copy. Bookseller Inventory # 31327
