About this Item

The Greatest Street in the World = Broadway. The Story of Broadway, Old and New, from the Bowling Green to Albany. 8vo. 509 pp. + 4 pp. of ads. Bound in the publisher's brown cloth, with gilt lettering to the spine and front board, as well as two seals gilt-stamped on the front board. Tops of the leaves are gilt. Profusely illustrated throughout with black-and-white photographs, reproductions, etc., as well as several foldout maps. Overall wear and weakening to the front and rear gutters. Biopredation to spine and along extremities, but sounds worse than it is. Text is clean and tight throughout. Scarce with Dust Jacket. A decent copy of this history of Broadway, which, at the time, was "the longest of the modern streets of the world. From the beginning of the nineteenth century Broadway has been the main artery of the city, and its growth has been an indication of the that of the old city upon the island of Manhattan. It is the epitome of the life of the great metropolis, with its various activities, mercantile, social, political, and theatrical" (from the Introduction). Bookseller Inventory # 1206001
