About this Item

First edition. 8vo. (xiii) 1, 368 pps. Brightly hand-tinted frontispiece of Mustapha Ali and with six facsimilies of documents at rear (five folding and one double-page integral). Col. Stanhope was dispatched as a representative of the London Greek Committee to offer assistance, monetary and otherwise, to the Greeks in setting up a stable constitutional government after the revolution. His personality and attitudes toward the Greeks left quite a bit to be desired however, and ofended leaders of both the eastern and western parts of the country. He left without achieving the Committee's goals and without dispersing any of the monies earmarked for the mission. (Interestingly, he sailed home on the same ship which carried the body of Lord Byron). In conteporary three quarter leather with red spine lable lettered in gilt and with ornate gilt stamping to the spine strip. The leather is well rubbed at edges, corners and hinges but the text block is firm. Significant foxing to prelims, a touch to the title page, text block clean. Thre small bookplates, of ascending age, front pastedown. The most recent owner was a professor of history at Oxford University in the mid-20th century. Bookseller Inventory # E2571
