About this title

An overview of the history and culture of Greece and its people including the geography, myths, arts, daily life, education, industry, and government, with illustrations from primary source documents.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 4 Up–Yet another country book, written at about the same level as the entries in the "Enchantment of the World" series (Children's, 2002) and "Cultures of the World" series (Benchmark, 2003). Although this one does not challenge either of those excellent titles on Greece, it has an attractive format, a lively writing style, and high-quality photos and reproductions. The book opens with a general introduction sketching the history of Greece and then offers chapters on land, people, languages, religion, art, and literature and music in modern and ancient times. A brief historical summary; economic, political, and cultural fact sheets; and a lengthy list of "primary sources images" are appended. However, some places mentioned in the text are not found on either of the two maps; the index is quite small; the captions for the illustrations sometimes repeat or contradict the text; and the time line doesn't include the classical period, although it is talked about throughout. Modern music and literature are given space, but Maria Callas, Dimitri Mitropoulos, and Nikos Kazantzakis are not mentioned–perhaps three of the most famous Greeks in the arts in modern times. If there is a need for another informative book on this country, this title is a solid addition, although the aforementioned series books should take precedence.–Judith Constantinides, formerly at East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA
