About this Item

A collection of Old Testament episodes featuring numerous Afr.-Amer. spirituals. arranged for voice and piano by Hall Johnson. It was well received by white audiences and critics, though Afr.-Amer.critics were critical of Connelly's claim to be presenting an authentic view of black religious thought. T.E.G. 150pp. This Large Paper Edition, printed by The Lakeside Press in Chicago, and signed by the author and illustrator on the colophon is the first edition to contain both the text of the play and the spirituals. The bright green covers are lightly soiled with some spotting . Lacking the slip case the book is protected with a mylar cover. The numerous black and white illustrations were actually used as sets for the play. There is also a colored frontispiece. The book is a Harlem Renaissance collectible. The play won the Pulitzer Prize in 1930.
