About this title
"Grip of the Anaconda" is an account of a private visit that the author made to Venezuela in January 2007. Written in the form of a discursive travel diary, the book's central focus is the figure of Hugo Chavez (clearly the anaconda of the title) amd his increasingly pervasive influence over that nation. While the author's critical view of Chavez is never in doubt, his narrative is personal and eclectic in content: an illuminating series of anecdotes and lesser known tidbits of information about a country that could soon be due to figure much more prominently in the American public consciousness. Included is a journey into the undeveloped and underpopulated southern interior, and encounters with indigenous tribes of the rainforest. This book makes compelling reading, equally for the uninitiated and for those already familiar with its subject.
