No pagination. 4to. Bound in quarter leather over cloth boards. Three colour illustrations (in Sept 13 issue, in honour of the Great Fair: the double-page illustration was stuck together and both pages suffered some damage), and many humourous drawings in every issue. Heavy edgewear, including some loss at corners and spine ends, joints starting, professional repairs to front hinge and first two pages - which also show some creasing, closed tears to several (10-15) pages (most tears are one inch or less, a few extend all the way across the page); binding is sound, and most issues unscathed: clear and legible throughout. "As editor of Grip magazine, J.W. Bengough made a lasting contribution to Canadian publishing. A pioneer of the editorial cartoon, he demonstrated that such images could be serious while simultaneously exuding playfulness, irony, and satiric charm." ([http://]hpcanpub.mcmaster[.]ca) Articles and cartoons feature provincial, national, and international political issues, including appearances of John A. MacDonald, Ned Hanlan, Oliver Mowat, Wm Gladstone, Grover Cleveland, tax exemptions, the admission of women to university, Prohibition, and the influence of caricature, all of which is accompanied by illustrated advertisements.
