From School Library Journal: Grade 7 Up-Clear and user-friendly, this set addresses the needs of student writers by offering a three-volume thesaurus, a grammar handbook, and a style manual, all of which have a dictionary format. The thesaurus has 17,000 main entries, each of which includes the part of speech, a concise definition, and a wide variety of alphabetical synonyms and antonyms. Colloquial expressions or nonstandard usage are marked. The vocabulary selection reflects modern practices and a timely awareness of new technologies, disciplines, nonsexist linguistics, and a global consciousness. Entries in the grammar handbook cover not only rules and examples, but also specific words that often cause errors. An engaging "How to Know What You Don't Know" section lists the most common mistakes that beset writers, a clever self-exam, and a key-word index. The style manual promises quick solutions to readers' common questions, but is not all inclusive. Factual entries on customary practices of spelling, punctuation, capitalization, abbreviations, and typography are interspersed among an expansive selection of words or phrases and factual information- from the signs of the zodiac to the names and terms of Supreme Court Justices. In an attempt to keep up with contemporary linguistic transformation, new words entering popular culture through business, science, technology, politics, and the arts are included as well as spellings of post-Soviet republics and Eastern European nations. Additional small sections focus on proper nouns in categories-from Academic Degrees and Titles to Religious Writings. Eight useful appendixes range from prefixes and suffixes to proofreaders signs and symbols. In a fast-changing world of sound bites, where "literature" is most commonly used succeeding "computer," these efficient volumes, while not Strunk or Roget, make sense.
