A Fine Collection of Seventy Caricatures from Woodward and Rowlandson's Grotesque Borders for Screens, Billiard Rooms, Dressing Rooms, etc.WOODWARD, George Moutard. ROWLANDSON, Thomas. (Drawn by Woodward, etched by Rowlandson). Grotesque Borders for Screens, Billiard Rooms, Dressing Rooms, & c., & c., Forming a Caricature Assemblage of Oddities, Whimsicalities & Extravaganzas!! London: Rudolph Ackermann, 1799-1800. First edition. Quarto (9 9/16 x 7 7/16 inches; 243 x 188 mm.). Twenty heavy-stock leaves, the first fifteen with two images on recto and two images on verso (60 images). The last five leaves each with two images on recto (10 images). The average size of each image is 3 3/4 x 3 3/4 inches.Mid nineteenth century half black roan over black pebbled cloth boards ruled in gilt. Spine ruled in gilt with maroon morocco label lettered in gilt. Housed in a felt-lined half black morocco over red cloth boards clamshell case.A unique album made up of seventy individual hand-colored caricatures cut from the above title. In all, there were possibly 288 images on wove paper issued in 46 strips of four panels of not necessarily equal size. While this album may appear to be a bastardization of the original, the strips were intended to be cut up, mixed and matched in accordance with the taste and space of the owner, for interior decoration, as expressed in the title. These highly amusing caricatures are very scarce. The Huntington Library appears to have the most complete set, with 24 plates, which presumably consist of three strips of four caricature pictures each, for a total of 288 images. However, the Huntington holdings are watermarked 1818 to 1822, so these may be re-strikes, and also may consist of pieces not in the original series. Princeton has eleven plates from the series, which would have 132 images. No other copies are indicated on OCLC First Serve. Yale's Walpole Center has a single plate, or twelve images. We assume a few fragments are held by other institutions without the original title. Also, perhaps there are pieces here and there on surviving fans and other furniture. However, one can not imagine that as wall borders there are still a plethora of examples surviving, if any at all. With the armorial bookplate of Boyce Harvey Combe (1816-?) of Oaklands, Battle, Sussex. Justice of the Peace for the county of Sussex; Major commanding 1st Battalion Cinque Ports Rifle Volunteers; was formerly an officer in the H.E.I.C. cavalry.Gordon, BC-34 (Grotesque Borders for Rooms and Halls); Not in Abbey.
