Group of three items relating to the high school athletic career of baseball Hall of Famer Larry Doby. 1) Official Program for football game between Eastside and Passaic (Patterson, New Jersey) high schools held at Hinchcliffe Stadium, Patterson, NJ on Nov. 4, 1939. 4 pp. folded heavy stock. Doby is listed as an end in the Eastside High School roster. Some light staining and some scrapbook glue residue on rear. 2) Program for the Thanksgiving Day, 1939 football game between Central High School and Eastside High School. Printed red wrappers with four-page interior section that includes a team photo of the Eastside squad with Doby second from the left, bottom row, and listed as an end on the roster. Also includes some individual photos of Central High players. Chipping and creasing with some separation at the folds. 3) Multi page program of Nov. 18, 1939 football game between Garfield High School and Eastside High School of Patterson. Color illustrated covers. 10 pp. with illustrations. Doby appears as left end on the Eastside Squad. Very good. Larry Doby, a South Carolina native who grew up in Patterson, New Jersey, began his professional baseball career with the Negro League Newark Eagles in 1942. In 1947, Cleveland Indians owner Bill Veeck brought him to the major leagues, making him the first African American player in the history of the American League (a few months after Jackie Robinson's debut with the Brooklyn Dodgers). He played in the majors for 13 seasons and in 1978 became the second black major league manager when he became skipper of the Chicago White Sox. He was named to the Hall of Fame in 1998.
