About this Item

The illustrations are done by a confident, proficient hand, with a balance of economy and detail. We assume an amateur did these drawings, but they could certainly pass for the work of a professional. The piquancy of the humor is somewhat blunted by our not knowing the officers who are being lampooned, but we can still appreciate the intended gentle levity and esprit, and additionally, the snapshots into the past. While the drawings are cartoons, the people depicted are recognizable types, and the imagery is generally vivid. Here one would scarcely have a sense of the perils that lie ahead for the recruits, and pranks, minor infractions and all around high jinks are very much the rule. The cards generally measure 112 by 138 mm, oblong, (a few are slightly smaller) and they were once mounted in an album, as evidenced by the abrasion the the center of each card's back. The cards are of a heavy stock, with ruled borders and a band of blindstamped veined lines providing something of a frame to each of the images. Bookseller Inventory # 004684

Shipping Terms:

The shipping cost provided automatically by ABE assumes that the item is the size of an average hardcover book. Since our stock is comprised largely of material which is bigger and heavier, we will often need to request additional shipping charges as a result. We pride ourselves on always packing safely, with the actual materials and method of packing depending on the item(s), where it is going, and with whom we are shipping. We most frequently use the post office, but on some high value items, or upon request, we may use alternatively UPS or FedEx. With the postal service, to domestic destinations with lower value items and the automatically furnished ABE shipping quote, we will usually use Media Mail; on higher value items we are partial to Priority or Express Mail. We will always seek to comply with a customer's wishes if they are communicated to us. When we seek additional shipping charges, we pass along those charges at our cost -- we do not add for handling or materials generally.
