Synopsis: Growing Up in Houston, first published in 1994, is the foundation of CHILDREN AT RISK's efforts to improve the quality of life for our youth in Greater Houston. By tracking key data, critical issues, and current trends that impact our children every single day, we learn more about the full spectrum of their needs and challenges -- from economic necessities and healthcare, to education and safety. CHILDREN AT RISK has developed a model of 130 quality of life indicators that delineate how children are doing in Houston and Harris County. We have used this model as a tool for the last 14 years. Data for the indicators is used to measure the progress the community is making in the well-being of its children.
About the Author: Children comprise over thirty percent of our population, yet this important sector of our community has no ability to make the legal and policy decisions that influence them most. CHILDREN AT RISK examines comprehensive statistical data and research in order to analyze policy decisions and make legislative recommendations to public officials; we also communicate this information to the entire community through our collaborations with health, education, environmental, legal and media groups and leaders. By protecting Houston's young and vulnerable citizens today, we establish the groundwork for a more vital, successful city in the future.
