About this title

Synopsis:

Merry prankster Arnold Dinklighter admits that he detests Mr. Applin, the supervisor of detention--a place where Arnold spends most of his time--but is not sure he likes the joke his pal Eddie wants to play on Applin: to kill him. Reissue.

From School Library Journal:

Grade 5-8-- Mr. Applin is a teacher who so enjoys being a disciplinarian that he takes over all detention sessions. Arnold Dinklighter, the narrator, is that truly obnoxious student who is as unpopular with the other kids as he is with his harassed teachers. The clash between "Apeface" and Arnold is hilarious. Arnold's world includes his loving but dysfunctional mother who sometimes can't quite remember he exists, but who needs his diligent protection from a world that wants to label her loony and incompetent. Arnold's lack of friends doesn't seem to bother him, yet he welcomes Edward Straight, a angry rebel who has just arrived at South Kenton. Edward's viciousness increases the tempo and potential severity of the anticipated crisis. Some of the writing has a hint of unevenness, but the characters are real and engaging while Arter is honest in sharing their unlovely sides. The book jacket and copy belie the book's serious side. If the Arnold Dinklighters of the world are enticed to read this engaging story, they'll find it tailor-made for them. There's hidden power here that seems so comic on the surface and yet uncompromisingly acquaints readers with unlovable, heroic Arnold and caring, dedicated "Apeface." --Carol A.
