About this Item

With 6 folding plates on 3 leaves. Contemporary boards; plates browned on the fore-edges, ownership stamp on preliminary blank leaf and on title. First edition of the author's first work, uncommon and rare in the market. His fundamental principles of the anatomy and physiology of plants proved for the first time that plant cells existed independently and were not part of a homogeneous vegetable mass. Link (1767-1850) studied under Blumenbach. He was professor of chemistry and botany at Breslau University and curator of the herbarium and director of the botanic garden in Berlin until he died. Link was one of the few German botanists of his time who aimed at a complete understanding of plants through a systematic anatomical and physiological research. Bookseller Inventory # 10883
