Book Description The Ryerson Press, Toronto, ON, Canada, 1968. Cloth. Book Condition: Very Good. Very little to no wear. Quite clean. 'Early Canadian silver is distinguishable from silver made in England, Scotland, Ireland and continental Europe because it is not stamped with the official mark of an assay office to denote where it was made or the quality of the silver; nor is there a date letter to indicate the year in which it was made. Marking of Canadian silver of the 18th and 19th centuries is somewhat similar to the method employed by American silversmiths during and after the colonial period. There are basic differences, but in broad terms the marking of Canadian silver reveals a distinctive and well-defined pattern.' Illustrated with b/w photos. 104 pages. 3.75 x 6.75 inches. Book. Book Description Hardcover. Book Condition: Fine. No Jacket. 1st Edition. Toronto: Ryerson, 1968. First edition (viii, 104). Narrow folio (17 cm.) in dark blue cloth, silver gilt titles, frontispiece. “With a special supplement of Hendry & Leslie ‘House’ Punches and the Marks of Dealers for whom they made Silver.” Early marks on Canadian silver, while derivative of their French and (later) English forebears, developed somewhat casually and were adapted to the makers’ preferences rather than answering to a guild’s regulations-- some were merely decorative and others imitative of ‘mother country’ markings. An as new copy of the Canadian silver collector’s essential vade mecum. Quite scarce. Bookseller Inventory # 1206
