About this Item

Boston, 1949, 1st, HMCo. Unique and magnificent design binding, attached silver cloth spine, hand-marbled (black and grey) paper boards (by the binder, Cris Takacs), 6x9½, 582p, all edges tinted, matching marbled paper slipcase. This is the WPA state writers project book for Louisiana and certainly our most colorful. Explaining all about Cajuns, Creoles, Voodoo, Jazz, Gumbo, Bayous, and the finer points of Spanish/French/Black cultural folklore and tales, Illustrated w/ photos and drawings. The endpapers are a ghost map. As a boy, I lived there before air conditioning changed New Orleans into an ordinary American town. To a native of New York, it was very strange, exotic, and hot. There was a siesta and people stayed up very late. Dad would take me at dawn, past steps littered with tired folks having the last Jax beer of the night, to the French Market for chicory coffee and hot beignets, eaten standing at counters, where there were silver powdered-sugar shakers chained to the columns. Since the city is six feet below sea level, the graveyards are all above ground, built of stone walls with bricked openings for each grave. After a year and a day, they knock out the bricks and push the bones to the back to make room for newcomers. Not ex-library, no internal marks, clean and tight. Bookseller Inventory # 53152
