Description:

Dust jacket complete, unclipped. Green cloth boards with bright gilt titling on spine. No ownership marks.16 pages of illustrations / plates. 139 pages clean and tight. There is only one event in Britain's history which is given annual remembrance - the discovery of the Gunpowder Plot in 1605. With the ritual burning of Guy Fawkes surrounded by an exploding array of fireworks, the salvation of King James I from the hands of the assassin is celebrated each November 5th. Behind this popular myth lies a story of political intrigue and religious conflict, comparable to a modern thriller, and attempts to establish what actually happened have caused heated controversy for centuries. C. Northcote Parkinson's interest in the Gunpowder Plot derives from the fact that he and Guy Fawkes attended the same school - St Peter's, one of the oldest schools in England, the royal and cathedral school of York. Earlier historians have tended to adopt one of two opposite points of view. Protestants have accepted the official story, agreeing that militant catholics planned to murder the King in Parliament. Some catholic apologists, on the other hand, have denied the reality of the plot or questioned, at least, whether its existence has ever been proved. They have pointed to contradictions in the evidence and cast doubts on the value of testimony extracted by torture. Some scholars have suggested that the plot was devised by the Earl of Salisbury and certain it is that no conspiracy could have better served his purpose. Agreeing wholly with neither side, the author of this book believes that the original plot was real enough but doomed to technical failure. Salisbury then substituted a different scheme, feasible in itself but watched from the outset by his secret service. This compelling story, which C. Northcote Parkinson presents with absorbing and enlightening detail, serves to remind us of the bomb scares of an earlier age. Size: 8vo. Bookseller Inventory #
