About this Item

Quarto (9 7/8 x 7 1/4"). 45, [3]pp (Text), 39 leaves (Plates). Original wrappers, with blue lettering to spine and red and blue lettering to front cover. Illustrated with 38 [i.e. 39] color drawings representing motion studies in red and blue, "Gymnastik, Sport, Schauspiel" outlines the "Loheland* principles of bodily movement. Five modes of action govern the body as an expressive sign: running, leaping, encircling, ball-tossing, and spear-throwing. Liberating and ecstatic experience emerge out of variations on these modes" (from the publishers). The plates are highly abstract diagrams of movement possibilities resulting from the five modes of action. The authors used red and blue pencils to describe the trajectories of the movements. Strongly influenced by the artisitic and musical principals of Rudolf Steiner their figures form and shapes follow the patterns he established and were transmitted in the Waldorf schools.Blue lettering partly faded on spine. Minor age-toning along edges of wrappers. Sporadic underlining in blue ink throughout pages 1-22 (not affecting lettering). Text in German. Wrappers in overall good+, interior in good+ to very good condition. * The Loheland settlement, near Fulda in Germany, was started in 1919 by Louise Langgaard and Hedwig von Rohden, both of whom were influenced by the counter-culture of the period, such as the Wandervogel movement and, from the early 1920s, Rudolf Steiner's Anthroposophy. Their idea was to have a settlement where young women could develop as free individuals and also could be trained as gymnastic teachers. The 42 hectare property consisted of arable land, meadows and woodland, where houses and workshops were built, and where women could live together, work in the gardens, on the land, in the workshops (including a photo studio) and undertake training courses. The school and the products of the workshops were well promoted, especially through the photography, and the settlement became well known for its expressionist dancers. Bookseller Inventory # 41034
