About this Item

Original Wraps. 8vo. 48 pages. 21 cm. First edition. In German. ‘What could we have expected from communism? : Documents and factual reports about the Sovietization of Romania’. A history of Romania from 1944 to 1956, with an emphasis on the horrors of Stalinism (gulags) , the persecution of the religious, etc. 1956 was a crucial year, that of the stated intention for a destalinization process in the Eastern Bloc and the short lived Hungarian revolution of 1956 (both key components in analyzing Romania’s political leadership and response to events, specifically the wave of demonstrations that also engulfed Romania soon after the events began in Hungary, which prompted arrests and a tightening of control, as well as the entrance of Soviet tanks to counteract the events in Hungary and their possible spread to Romania) . Edited and compiled by Emil Wiederkehr, press secretary of the Swiss office for Refugee assistance of the association of former concentration camp prisoners. During the 1950’s he published a half dozen works on Stalinism and the Sovietization of eastern countries. Includes laid-in original card announcing the publication. Subjects: Romania. 1956. Soviets.
